1341369 Weapons J W NEWMAN 21 June 1972 [25 June 1971] 29077/72 Heading F3C [Also in Divisions B4-B5] A knife comprises an elongated blade 10 having tip portion 17 and a root portion 19 to which is secured an impact member 11, a handle 12 being attached to the impact member. The blade may be provided with two sharpened edges 15, 16 and be fixed as shown or it may be of folding or sliding construction and with a single or serrated edge; pointed spring-loaded fingers may be mounted on the blade to prevent easy removal of blade after insertion. The impact member 11 may be spherical as shown or of conical or cylindrical shape and is provided to increase the impact energy when the knife is used for throwing at targets; the impact head may be used as a hammer or truncheon. The handle consists of a tubular member 12 fixed or removably attached to the impact member and may be covered by a wood, leather or plastic grip. In order to stabilize the knife when used for throwing, fins 20 are provided. The fins are formed by three spring members 23 connected by a collapsible surface 21, e.g. of fabric or plastics material. The springs are connected to a plunger 24 slidable within the handle tube against the action of a spring 28. When the fins are not required, they are pressed into the handle and retained there by a spring-loaded ball 30. The end of the tube may be closed by a screwed cap. In a modification. Fig. 8, the spring 28 is omitted the fins being merely pressed into the handle against the resilience of the fins springs and locked by a knurled nut 60. When the fins are required the nut is slackened and the fins pulled outwardly by an end portion 62. The fins may be of arcuate sheet metal which wrap around the piston 24 or they may be stored within a removable handle which is removed before flight or formed in the surface of the handle and folding outwardly therefrom.
