Abstract

1341325 Mattresses; adjustable beds J T SCALES 5 July 1972 [9 July 1971] 32461/71 Headings A4M, A4J A mattress, cushion or like support has an inlet for connection to a source of gas under pressure and has at least that part of its surface which is intended to make contact with the user formed from a flexible material which is gas permeable but is non-permeable to solids and liquids. The material may comprise nylon or polyester fabric coated with a gas permeable polyurethane, silicone or vinyl copolymer resin. In one embodiment, Figs.1, 5, caps 8 formed from the gas permeable material are bonded, at 9, to the rims 7 of walls 4 formed integrally with a flexible, gas-tight base 2 to define cavities 5. The base 2 is provided with inlet apertures 3 connected through a pressure regulator 19 to a pump 20. Outlet openings 6 in the walls 4 may be fitted valves to control the discharge of air. The outlets 6 may be connected to a common outlet pipe. The base 2 has fasteners 14 for engaging further fasteners on a base board 13. In another embodiment, Fig.7, a mattress comprises chambers defined by tube like members 33 with a concertina-like lower portion 32. In a further embodiment Figs.10, 11 (not shown), a mattress comprises a bottom cell (65) provided on its top with an array of upstanding frusto-pyramids (68), cones or hemispheres. A bed Fig.12 for supporting a plurality of mattress sections as described above, comprises a frame 42 supported on a wheeled chassis 40, the frame 42 being pivotally mounted at 43 for angularly adjustment by a double acting hydraulic ram 44. The frame 42 supports three sub-frames 45-47. One sub-frame 45 is pivoted at 49 for adjustment of its inclination by means of a ram 51. The other two subframes 46, 47 are pivotally connected together at their adjacent ends and are pivotally mounted at their outer ends on slides 52, 53. A ram 54 is operable to displace the sub-frames 46, 47 upwardly into inverted V formation.
