Abstract
1341163 Temperature responsive actuating element LANDIS & GYR AG 3 Feb 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 5130/72 Heading G1D Thermal energy is converted to mechanical energy by a device wherein heat is applied to liquid in one or more annular chambers which is/are in communication with, but thermally insulated from, a further annular chamber so as to cause a volume expansion thereof, and hence a movement of an actuating rod attached thereto. In the embodiment shown, the device comprises annular chambers 9, 10, 2, chamber 2 being seated by spring bellows 6. Heating elements 11, 12 vaporize the liquid, preferably water, in chambers 9, 10 thereby causing contraction of the bellows 6 and hence movement of a rod 7. Use of only one of the elements 11, 12 moves the rod 7 by a half-stroke. In modifications, a single uniformly wound heating element is used Fig.1, (not shown), or a single asymmetrically wound element is used in combination with a chamber whose inner wall converges towards chamber 2, Fig.3, (not shown). This latter modification gives rise to a non-linear extension of the rod 7 with time.
