Abstract

1341013 End fittings for ropes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [14 Jan 1970] 1838/70 Heading D1T The end of a fibre rope 8 is splayed apart and gripped between a surrounding tapered socket 1 and an inner member 3 having the shape of a cone with the apex 4 of larger included angle than the body of the cone, the space between the tapered inner socket wall and the body of the cone being of substantially constant annular area. The cone angle of the body of the cone is less than the natural angle of friction between the material of the cone and the rope fibres 9. The minimum length of the tapered part of the socket is preferably not less than six times the diameter of the cross-section of the unsplayed area of rope fibres. The fibres 9 may be splayed apart whilst in the socket 1 and the member 3 driven into position; or the rope may be passed through the socket, the fibre ends splayed apart, the member 3 inserted into the splayed-out formation and the rope and member 3 drawn back into the socket. The socket may be of metal and the member 3 of plastics.
