Abstract

1340772 Tunnelling and mining machines DEMAG AG 5 Feb 1971 4019/71 Heading E1F A tunnelling or mining machine having a cutting head 24 has the position of the cutting head relative to the frame 21 of the machine represented by the position of an indicator which reproduces the movement of the head to a reduced scale, the movement of the head being controlled to keep the indicator within a representation of the tunnel crosssection which representation is adjusted in position when an error is detected between the actual position relative to the machine frame of a tunnel reference axis provided by a beam of radiation 27 and the theoretical position which the axis would have were the machine on course, whereby the machine when operated returns to its proper course. The head 24 is on a universally movable arm 22. The beam 27 may be that of a laser, and its position is shown on a scaled screen, Fig. 5 (not shown), carried on the machine. The representation of the tunnel cross-section is carried on a second screen which is adjustable relative to the machine to correct any error indicated on the scaled screen. Vertically and horizontally extending indicating members are connected to the arm 22, e.g. by Bowden cables, rods or pressure operated devices, for corresponding movement relative to the second screen, the position of the head 24 relative to the representation of the tunnel cross-section 'being given at the intersection of the indicating members, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The second screen may be angularly adjusted about an axis extending longitudinally of the tunnel. The machine control can be manual or by automatic means using sequence - control devices.
