Abstract

1340067 Sulphur, removing sulphur valves from gas streams BRITISH GAS CORP 25 Aug 197] [26 Aug 1970] 41113/70 Heading C1A Sulphur is produced from a gaseous mixture containing H 2 S and SO 2 , and optionally COS, CS 2 and steam, by contacting the mixture in a reaction vessel with a catalyst comprising oxides of Ni and Mo, whereby H 2 S and SO 2 react to form sulphur. The catalyst also operates on the reactions COS + H 2 O # H 2 S + CO 2 and CS 2 + H 2 O#CO 2 + H 2 S; the resulting H 2 S reacting with any SO 2 as illustrated above to reduce the SO 2 content to negligible proportions. After removal of S by cooling &c., the residual H 2 S and trace SO 2 can be removed by scrubbing techniques of established type to produce a pure effluent. The catalyst preferably comprises a carrier e.g. of alumina on which the oxides are disposed. The catalytic material preferably contains 1-5% NiO and 3-10% Mo oxide, based on the wt. of the metal in relation to the total weight of the catalyst including the carrier.
