Abstract

1339841 Flocculating A E STALEY MFG CO 25 May 1971 [1 July 1970] 16933/71 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] Clay is flocculated from aqueous suspension by treatment thereof with a gelatinized non-crosslinked cationic starch ether having a degree of substitution of at least 0À7, said starch ether being defined by the formula wherein in (1) St is starch, X- is an anion and R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are each an alkyl radical of up to 12 C atoms, cyclohexyl, phenyl or benzyl, and when any substituents are the same none has more than 6 C atoms, and when any substituent has more than 6 C atoms the other two substituents are alkyl radicals of up to 2 carbon atoms and in (2) wherein St is starch, X- is an anion and R 1 and R 2 form a heterocyclic ring including the N atom, the ring being morpholinyl, pyrrolidyl, or piperidyl, each heterocyclic ring optionally bearing one alkyl substituent of not more than two carbon atoms and R 3 is a C 1 -C 4 lower alkyl group.
