Abstract
1339494 Finishing fabrics SAMCOE HOLDING CORP 1 Feb 1971 3633/71 Heading D1S Striped tubular knitted fabric is converted to heat-stabilized, stripe-matched and straightened tubular fabric by spreading the greige fabric to desired width and maintaining the fabric under lengthwise tension, slitting the tubular knitted fabric longitudinally while the fabric remains in greige condition, shifting the opposed slit edges of the greige fabric longitudinally and realigning them to convert the spiral stripe configuration to a circular stripe configuration, rejoining the slit edges together in the re-aligned condition, straightening the realigned stripe configuration of the greige fabric by selectively advancing, retarding and. distorting portions of the fabric while conveying the fabric generally, in an advancing direction, until the stripes are disposed at right angles to the axes of the fabric, and thereafter processing and heat-setting the fabric. As shown, a tubular knitted greige fabric 10, made of at least in part heat-settable yarns, e.g. polyester or nylon, or made of at least in part non-heat-settable yarns impregnated with a heat-settable resin, and having a helical coloured stripe 12, is fed in flattened form around tension rollers 24, under an adjustable weighted dancer roll 25 and over a guide roller 26. A knife 13 longitudinally slits the fabric whilst it passes over an internal belt or frame stretcher 14. The stripes on the upper slit edge of the fabric are re-aligned with the lower edge by three rollers 16, 17, 18 acting upon the upper fabric layer only. The realigned edges are sewn together by an overthe-edge sewing machine 27 provided with a knife 28 in advance of the needle 34 to trim of the margin edges 29 of the fabric which edges are blown by an air jet tube 30 into a disposal conduit 31. The tube 30 is positioned so as to tend to flatten the fabric edges. The re-aligned stripes 12a are straightened by rollers 36, 37, 38. The subsequent processing of the fabric may include impregnating with at least one liquid solution, setting the fabric to a desired geometrical form by internal distention and drying. Thereafter, the fabric is heat-set, e.g. in a high temperature dryer.
