Abstract

1338737 Converting rotary motion to reciprocating motion; positive clutches A E GOLDFARB 23 Feb 1972 [24 Feb 1971] 8345/72 Headings F2C and F2Q [Also in Division A6] A mechanical, motor-driven doll (see Divisions A5-A6) has its upper torso rocked back-and forth, and from side-to-side. Convertinq rotary motion to reciprocatinq motion.-In one form, a motor driven gear 37, Fig. 1, carries pivotally and eccentrically one end of a rod 41 journalled by a ball 45 in a fixed frame 49 so that its top end 51 performs an orbital movement. A second frame 61, mounted for pivotal motion both from side-to-side and back-and-forth of the doll, carries two disks 57, 59, (see also Fig. 4c), having diametral slots 69, 71 through which the top end of the rod 51 passes. The two disks 57, 59 are angularly adjustable and interconnected within the second frame 61 for manual control. In one extreme position, the two slots 69, 71 are aligned parallel to the shoulders of the doll. Accordingly the upper end 51 of the rod slides along the slots 69, 71 and only the fore-and-aft component of the orbital motion of the rod is effective, to move the disks, &c. 57, 59 back-and-forth, so that the doll nods forwards, &c. By turning the two disks 57, 59 through 90 degrees, the slots 69, 71 are aligned perpendicularly to the shoulders; accordingly the rod end 51 slides in the slots in the back-and-forth direction, and the frame 61, &c. rocks from side-to-side. Further angular adjustment of the lower disk 59 is prevented by abutment of a lug on the disk with a lip on the frame 61. However, the upper disk 57 can be turned through a fastener 90 degrees, overcoming the connection between the two disks, to the position shown, Fig. 4c, with the two slots 69, 71 at right angles. The frame 61 is thus constrained to follow the back-and-forth, &c. motions of the rod end 51, and perform a rotating movement. Adjustment of the angular settings of the disks 57, 59 between the described positions provides compound movements. Positive clutches.-In another form, two positive clutches having two output members 149, 151, Fig. 8, journalled upon a rod 143 and actuating separate mechanisms, has a driving clutch member 141 slidden to three operative positions. In the first position, the driven clutch member 149 is engaged, as shown. By sliding the driving clutch member 141 rightwards to a second, median, position, the second driven clutch member 151 is also engaged, without disengagement from the first driven clutch member 149, Fig. 10c (not shown). When the driving clutch member 141 is slidden to a third, extreme right position, the driven clutch member 149 is disengaged.
