Abstract
1338503 Lasers BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 23 May 1972 [13 July 1971] 32760/71 Heading H1C One of the resonator mirrors 4 of a dye laser medium 1, Fig. 1, is formed by a rotating diffraction grating, and the laser's flashlamp is activated only when the grating makes a predetermined angle # with the laser axis 6 so that an output beam of predetermined frequency is obtained. The angle # is detected by a lamp 8 and photodetector 9, light from the lamp being passed to the detector by a mirror 7 mounted on the back of the grating. When the photodetector is activated its output is passed to a delay unit 10 which feeds trigger source 11; the latter receives power from supply 13 and fires the flashlamp within the pumping cavity 1. The delay unit is set by an external voltage 12, so that the frequency of the laser output pulse from the second resonator mirror 2 depends on this external control voltage and corresponds to the 'wavelength reflected by the grating after the time delay. A polygonal grating and a polygonal lamp reflector may be used to obtain higher repetition rates, Fig. 2 (not shown).
