Abstract
1337561 Repairing cables BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd 9 July 1971 [9 July 1970] 33453/70 Addition to 1297381 Heading H2C To repair a cable with a damaged aluminium sheath 2, its PVC outer sheath is cut back, the damaged part of the aluminium sheath is repaired and surrounded by a sleeve 3, a mould is constructed around the repair and a resin body is cast in the mould. Polyethylene tape is initially wrapped around the repaired sheath 2 to form annular walls 1 and a sleeve 3 of unplasticized PVC with a longitudinal slit is sprung over the walls. To form the mould, further walls 4, 5 of polyethylene tape are built up around the cable and gaps are cut out in the tops of the walls. Longitudinal strips 7 of expanded polythene are then positioned on opposite sides of the slit and polythene sheets 9 are secured by PVC tape over the ends of the sleeve 3 leaving a gap over the space between the two strips 7. The mould is completed by positioning further strips 10 of expanded polythene over the strips 7. The mould is filled with an acrylic resin composition, which then hardens thus sealing the slit in the sleeve and surrounding the ends of the sleeve. The mould is then removed and the projecting edges of the resin strip are filed down.
