Abstract

1337051 Selective signalling SEARLE MEDIDATA Inc 20 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 43691/71 Heading G4H A data terminal for the entry of interpretive data into a computer-based medical record of a patient, comprises: a plurality of console buttons each representing a respective interpretive phrase which is to be entered into the medical record; a numeric keyboard; means to assemble digital signals representing the key and button actuations into data words for transmission to a computer; means for decoding data words received from the computer and for displaying numerical data and messages indicative of terminal operation, both decoded from the words from the computer; means for visually indicating receipt by the computer of a data word representing an interpretive phrase; means for manually causing entry of data into the medical record after visual verification thereof; and means operative in response to an operator identification code for enabling terminal operation. A card reader in the console reads the operator identification code and the computer enables operation of the console (terminal) if this code is permissible. The numeric keyboard is for entry of a patient number and a check digit, both of these being sent to the computer and returned for display (e.g. by Nixie tubes) on the console, for verification. Interpretive phrase information entered on the console buttons is also sent, and returned to light lamps in the buttons for verification. Pressing a lighted button again erases the information at the computer. After verification, the operator can alternatively cause the information to be entered into the medical record by pressing an "enter" key. Lamps and a rear projection display, all controlled from the computer, give instructions to the operator. A shift register in the terminal is used for communication, in both directions, with the computer. The words sent from computer include the terminal address, since other terminals can be connected to the same transmission link. Print out is provided.
