Abstract
1336715 Toothed gearing PHOTON Inc 12 Jan 1971 [15 Dec 1969] 61089/69 Heading F2Q A coarse and fine drive are used to rapidly and accurately position a carriage or other mass having a rack 18. The coarse drive imparts a rotational movement only by a motor driving a helical gear in engagement with a gear 14 on a shaft 16 which turns a gear 18 in engagement with the rack 19 while the fine drive imparts only an axial movement to the shaft 16 by a motor driven cam 22 and follower 26 in engagement with the helical drive gears which movement gives fine movement to the rack by interengagement of the end of the shaft. A spring 30 maintains engagement of the cam and follower 22, 26. The two drives may be operated at the same time to effect rapid positioning of the rack 19. In a modification a helical rack and gear are employed and axial movement of the shaft produces the fine drive through these.
