Abstract

1336234 Cooling towers; surface condensers M HAMON 19 April 1971 [7 April 1970] 21530/71 Headings F4K and F4S Means for reducing the vapour plume arising at the air-outlet end of a cooling tower 10, comprises a plurality of finned tubes 56 carrying a hot fluid, whereby the relative humidity of the issuing air is decreased and vapour condensation therein reduced. The fins are shaped to provide a tortuous path for the air in the manner of a conventional mist eliminator and the heated area may extend over the whole or part only, of the tower cross-section. Alternatively the finned tubes may be employed with conventional mist eliminators in a stacked arrangement. The hot fluid may be a vapour which is thereby condensed, or it may be the water to be cooled subsequently in the tower. Such water may be distributed by conventional distributing means or it may be distributed through nozzles projecting out of the tubes in the lowermost of a plurality of layers of tubes (Fig. 9) for a distance such that the issuing liquid does not impinge on the fins. Where the tubes are in layers, each layer may be connected to the same or to a different source of the hot fluid.
