Abstract
1334732 Coated tablets SCHERICO Ltd 5 Jan 1971 [6 Jan 1970] 448/71 Heading A5B A pharmaceutical tablet comprises a core surrounded by layers containing medicament and between two medicament layers a layer comprising 10-50 weight % of silica gel having an average pore diameter of 90-400 Angstroms. The medicament layers may be surrounded by further outer coating layers. Similar porous silica gel layers may be present between the core and the medicament layers, between the medicament and coating layers and/or between two coating layers. The medicament in the layers may be phenylephrine or phenylephrine hydrochloride. The core may also include a medicament. The tablet is made by applying successive coatings to the core and drying the coated core at elevated temperature. The silica gel layer may be applied as powder or slurry. In an Example, a composition consisting of phenacetin, caffeine, starch and gelatin solution is formed into granules by the wet granulation method. The granules are mixed with calcium stearate, aspirin and more starch and compressed into cores. The cores are coated with (a) a composition comprising sugar, acacia and water, (b) a powder consisting of silica gel and terra alba (CaSO 4 ), (c)-(l) a suspension consisting of chloropheniramine maleate, L-phenylephrine, sugar, acacia and water alternating with the silica gel/terra alba powder, (m)-(o) three coats of a composition consisting of silical gel, terra alba, titanium dioxide, corn starch and water and (p) titanium dioxide suspended in sugar syrup. The tablet is dried after each coating of silica gel/terra alba powder.
