Abstract

1334706 N-methylation of diamino-dihydroxyanthraquinones IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 July 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 37312/70 Heading C4P The invention comprises a process for the preparation of mixtures of disperse anthraquinone dyestuffs comprising a dyestuff of the formula and at least one of the dyestuffs represented by the formulµ wherein R is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, one of X<SP>1</SP> and X<SP>2</SP> is H and the other is methyl, and Y and Z are each H; C 1 -C 4 alkyl or Cl which comprises reacting an anthraquinone compound of the second formula above wherein Y, Z and R are as above in water or in a water-miscible organic liquid optionally containing water with 1 to 20 moles of formaldehyde per mole of anthraquinone compound at a temperature between 20‹ C. and the boiling point of the reaction medium. The reaction preferably takes place at pH 0À5 to 4À0. The preferred dyestuff mixtures obtained contain 45 to 60% by weight of 1,5 - dihydroxy - 4,8 - diamino - 2 - (41- hydroxyphenyl) - anthraquinone and 35 to 45% of a mono-N-methyl derivative thereof. The starting materials may be obtained by desulphonation of corresponding anthraquinone sulphonic acids using zinc dust in an aq. alkaline solution. The starting material may be used without separation from the reaction medium and the product mixture of disperse dyes may contain some residual sulphonic acid groups. The dye mixtures dye cellulose mono- and triacetates, polyamides, and polyesters in greenishblue shades.
