Abstract
1333977 Polymerizing ethylene MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 24 June 1971 [24 June 1970] 29788/71 Heading C3P Ethylene is continuously polymerized, alone or with a comonomer, at a pressure of 500 to 5000 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> in a reaction apparatus comprising a plurality of reactors in series and at least one product separator, at the same pressure as the reactors, between two adjacent reactors, the reaction mixture being cooled in or immediately preceding the separator by contacting with separately supplied ethylene and comonomer if present. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of oxygen, organic peroxides and azo compounds as initiators; and alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons as chain transfer agents. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated, and examples describe the polymerization of (1, 2, 4 and 5) ethylene, together with (3) vinyl acetate, in the presence of propylene and (1 to 3) oxygen and (4 and 5) di-tbutyl peroxide.
