Abstract
1333912 Transistor bi-stable and timing circuits MULLARD Ltd 5 Nov 1970 [20 Oct 1969] 51287/69 Heading H3T [Also in Division G1] In a system which switches lighting on or off according to the ambient light level, a photodiode or phototransistor D1 provides an amplified output to devices Q4, Q5 having different threshold levels whose outputs are combined so that if both thresholds are exceeded the lighting is switched off, whereas if neither is attained the lighting is switched on. The response of the system in the MID region depends on whether the level was previously HIGH or LOW. This variable MID level response is provided by a backlash circuit (Fig. 3, not shown) including the operational amplifiers Q4, Q5, Q8. The output of Q8 is the basic output from the controller, which is modified by a timing circuit C4-R12 so that transient dull conditions, e.g. clouds passing across the sun, do not actuate the lighting system. The output from the photodiode D1 which may be employed in the photovoltaic mode, is amplified by the variable gain operational amplifier Q2 whose gain (RI adjustment) sets both the upper threshold on Q4 and the lower threshold on Q5. Below its threshold Q4 gives a negative saturation output, above the threshold positive saturation Q5 gives a positive saturation output below its threshold, negative saturation above. To perform a cloud recognition function, the output from the R12-C4 network is monitored by the FET Q9. With a high output from Q8, diode D2 conducts and capacitor C4 charges to line potential. Hence the amplifier Q10 has a positive saturation output, which energizes control relay RR to turn on the lighting. With a low output from Q8, diode D2 is cut off and capacitor C4 begins its discharge. After a preset time interval amplifier Q10 switches to negative saturation, and control relay RR switches off. if a high output from Q8 returns during the discharge period the timer is reset. ln this way, the lighting is not switched off until bright conditions have persisted for fifteen minutes. Pilot lamps B1-B5 monitor the output voltages of the various operational amplifiers and hence give a visual indication of the state of the circuit at any time.
