Abstract
1333685 Arc extinction in switches HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 18 Feb 1972 [9 March 1971] 7614/72 Heading H1N A high voltage circuit-breaker comprises a line switch 50 and an impedance-increasing means 52 in parallel with the switch 50, the means 52 including an energy-absorbing resistor 58 in series with a cyclically-operable switch 56 which is operated so as to provide an increasing ratio of off to on time, and a parallel capacitor 54 to limit the rate of voltage rise upon opening of the switch. The line switch 50 may be a conventional circuit-breaker, or a vacuum switch with a circuit to provide an artificial current zero as in Specification 1,332,777. The switch 56 may be a crossed field switch as indicated, a parallel capacitor 60 being provided to enable switching off at rising high voltages. In other arrangements, the switch 56 may be formed by two triggered vacuum gap devices, Fig. 7 (not shown), two triggered vacuum gap devices and a triggered spark gap, Fig. 8 (not shown), or a crossed field switch in combination with a triggered vacuum gap device, Fig. 9 (not shown). Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates a high voltage D.C. system using two D.C. circuitbreakers.
