Abstract

1332897 Photo detector arrangement STD SERVICES Ltd 13 Oct 1970 [13 Oct 1969] 50180/69 Heading G1A [Also in Division G4] Apparatus for measuring the length of tubes comprises a hollow member 13 containing a light source, a hollow member 14 containing a series of equally spaced photo-sensitive devices and a counter which counts the number of photo-sensitive devices blocked from illumination when a tube to be measured passes through the space between the hollow members. Optical fibres convey the light from the source to a series of projectors in the member 13, each projector being aligned with a respective photo-sensitive device. The outputs of the photo-sensitive devices are connected to a shift register the bi-stable circuits of which are scanned and produce a pulse for each circuit which had its state changed by a tube falling from a ramp 11 to a rack 12. The pulses produced by the shift register are counted and the counter output is fed to a printer which prints out the total length of a batch of tubes.
