Abstract
1332390 Rotary pumps CHANDLER EVANS Inc 7 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 41690/71 Heading F1F In pumping apparatus for a liquid such as gasturbine fuel a centrifugal pump 20 is connected in series with gear pump 24 and driven simultaneously with the latter by a shaft 40, the pump 24 being unloaded when the pressure P F at an outlet 14 reaches a predetermined value. A sealing block 46 is urged towards the gears 32, 34 by a spring 52 and defines a discharge chamber 47 communicating with the outlet 14 and a valve chamber 62 through an outlet 26 and an orifice 58, respectively. While the pressure P F is less than the predetermined value a valve-member 74 closes an orifice 70 so that the said pressure helps the spring 52 to hold the sealing block against the gears. When the said value is reached the pressure P F acting upon spring-loaded bellows 78 by way of a filter 27 withdraws the valve member from the orifice 70, the consequent pressuredrop across the orifice 58 causing retraction of the sealing block. A pressure-relief conduit 28 is controlled by a check-valve 30. In a second embodiment, Fig.2, spring-loaded wedges 106, 108 replace the spring 52, shafts 112 serving as pistons being subjected to the pressure P F through an orifice 120, which causes a loss of pressure when the orifice 70 is opened. A somewhat . similar arrangement is made in a third embodiment, Fig.3 (not shown), the wedges being replaced by struts (216) sliding on oblique fixedsurfaces and engaged by spring-loaded pistons (210, 212) subjected to the pressure in the chamber 47 through an orifice (204) in the sealing block. The wedges 106,108 may be replaced by a single wedge (not shown). Each embodiment may include check plates for the gears.
