Abstract
1332051 Inflatable cushions VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd 22 June 1972 [22 July 1971] 34457/71 Heading B7B In a vehicle restraint system the valve connecting a fluid pressure source with an inflatable cushion is operated by a seat belt system when the force thereupon exceeds a predetermined maximum. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 1, a plug valve 20 anchored on the vehicle floor is operated when a predetermined force is applied to lap belt 38 thus connecting pressure vessel 16 with inflatable cushions 26, 28. The cushions are encased in decorative covers 30, 32 which split along weakened parts thereof upon inflation of the cushions. The valve 20 may comprise a spring loaded plug valve as shown in Fig. 2, or a spring loaded slide valve, Fig. 3, having transfer grooves 112, 114 of different widths so that movement of the slide member 102 effects sequential inflation of cushions 26, 28. Alternatively the valve 20 may comprise a sealed plug valve, Fig. 6, so that a force by the seat belt is applied as a torque, via lever 165, to valve plug 163 to shear a necked portion 168 leaving an annular ring portion welded to the valve body. Gaseous pressure in reservoir 161 on the remainder of plug body 163 thus forces a shouldered portion thereof into sealing engagement with washer 167 thus connecting reservoir 161 with exit pipe 166. The valve means may preferably be mounted near the inflatable cushions and actuated by the seat belt system via a mechanical linkage such as a Bowden cable, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the pressure reservoir is mounted on the transmission tunnel of the vehicle and the inflatable cushion fastened to a seat belt.
