Abstract
1331955 Soldering W S FORTUNE 10 Nov 1970 [19 Jan 1970 18 March 1970] 53417/70 Heading B3R A soldering-desoldering tool comprises a metal heating bit having capillary slot means opening on to the working surface thereof, and having a heating shaft receiving bore extending from its end opposite the working surface, a heating shaft being located in the bore. In an electrically heated tool 10, Fig. 1, the heating element is disposed in a shaft 14 on which fits an axially bored longitudinally split tip 18 held by a spring clip 26, the tip being of brass or steel plated with electroless nickel. The tapered forward end 29 of the tip has a sloping working face 32 and two slots 34 arranged at right angles entending from the face 32. In use the face 32 is held on a circuit board and solder is drawn into the slots 34, which solder may be removed by tapping, by an air blast or suction from an outside source. Heat radiating fins may be provided on the rearward end of the tip and marks may indicate the temperature obtainable when the end of the shaft is opposite such marks. The working face may be provided with a notch to enable lifting of a lead wire. A tip 82, Fig. 6, has a chisel end in which a number of longitudinally arranged capillary passages 84 are cut and an inspection hole 88 is provided to view the end of the shaft and for cleaning A retainer clip 94 is provided and it may have radial cooling fins. The end of the tip may be smaller than the remainder or larger as shown in Fig. 9, when the working end 110, solid or thin walled, has a large number of slots. When the tool is to be used for soldering the capillary passages are filled with solder. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,162,634.
