Abstract
1331875 Metal-sheathed elements C H VAN TOORN 23 June 1971 [23 June 1970 (2)] 29441/71 Heading H5H [Also in Division H2] A connector comprises a contact pin 13 adapted to be connected to the conductor 3 of a metal-oxide insulated metal sheathed 2 cable, with an exposed stripped end 6 of the conductor and a part of the pin surrounded by a sleeve 8 connected to the sheath via a sleeve 7, the ends of the sheath and oxide insulation 4 being spaced from the pin and a pressure member 17, which is secured within and is movable axially of the sleeve, maintaining a clamping connection between the exposed conductor and a thickened part 14 of the pin and compressing an insulating disc 12 into and around the conductor end 6 and the space between the pin and the ends of the sheath 2 and insulation 4. The end 6 of the cable, which may be a heating element, is formed into a coil 11 and clamped between a copper disc 10 and the pin part 14 under the action of the pressure member 17 which is carried by a collar 19 screwed on to the sleeve 8 to compress the insulating disc 12 and two other insulating members 15, 16. The disc 12 and members 15, 16 may be of compacted pulverized sintered ceramic material. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the enlarged part of the pin comprises a conical end split axially into two parts (53, 54) into which split the stripped conductor end is held and clamped between the two parts by the pressure member (36) which is formed with a conical recess bearing on the conical end of the pin; furthermore, the pressure member is formed with two ribs which engage complementary grooves (40, 41) in the sleeve (28) to prevent relative rotation. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the pin comprises two mutually insulated parts (73, 75) each split at an enlarged end to receive a respective one of two conductors (57, 58) of a twin core cable.
