Abstract

1331266 Laminates HEXCEL CORP 15 Oct 1970 [17 Oct 1969] 49120/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] Lightweight structural honeycomb panel comprises a honeycomb core having a plurality of cells and a fibrous material disposed in the cells, the fibrous material having a density in the cells of less than two pounds per cubic foot to impart to the panel sound absorbing and thermal insulating characteristics, the fibrous material comprising a plurality of fibres, each fibre being restricted to a single cell of the honeycomb core. The honeycomb core can be metal or resin-coated paper. The fibres may be glass fibres. A honeycomb sandwich exhibiting sound-absorbing and thermal insulating properties comprises, as shown in Fig. 3, the honeycomb core 34 filled with fibrous material 52 and facing 54 and 54a bonded to the honeycomb core. Facing 54a is porous or includes perforations to enable sound waves to penetrate into the honeycomb cells for absorption by the fibrous filling 52 if the sandwich is used as a sound absorber. If the sandwich is only used for thermal insulation purposes facing 54a can be constructed of non-porous solid material. The facing is bonded to the core with a bonding agent 55.
