Abstract
133,114. Palin, J. Aug. 2, 1918. Systems for controlling reciprocating motion. - An electric motor for a hoist or the like is controlled by switches operated automatically to run for a certain time in a forward direction, to run for a certain time in the reverse direction, and then after a predetermined lapse of time to run again in the forward direction. Two switches A, B are supported by a platform a fixed to vertical tubular pillars C, D which are connected by a cross-tube G. One end of the operating-lever c<1> of the switch A is forked and connected by a pin e to a plunger g in the tube C, and the other end of the lever is connected by a rod h to a ring i which can slide on the tube D. The other switch B is operated by an arm connected by a rod to a ring r on the tube D and to a plunger o in the tube D. Two endless chains s, t driven by the controlled motor are arranged on opposite sides of the pillar D and are connected by slotted links x and pins y to a tubular block y<1> whicH, in its lower position, surrounds the plunger o. An opening at the top of the tube D is connected to an inlet on the tube C by a passage with a number of baffle-plates to delay the passage of the operating-weight. When the apparatus is idle, the ball weight is held by a stop near the top of pillar C, and the pins y and slotted links x of the chains are near the top of the pillar D. When the stop is withdrawn, the ball falls upon the plunger g to close the switch A to start the motor. This operates the chains s, t until the pins y reach the lower end of the pillar D and depress the ring i, thereby opening the switch A. This movement of the switch lifts the ball until it reaches the cross-passage G, when it rolls into the pillar D and falls upon the plunger o, which then closes the switch B through the pin n and rod m. The motor is thereby reversed, and the chains s, t are moved until the pins y strike the upper ring r and open the switch B to stop the motor. The movement of the chains raises the ball weight to the outlet of the pillar D, and it rolls through the baffle passage to the inlet of the pillar C, and the cycle of events is repeated.
