Abstract
1331071 Foamed and unfoamed polyvinyl alcohol fibre compositions or graft polymers JAPAN SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO Ltd 27 Oct 1970 [27 Oct 1969 20 March 1970 20 July 1970] 50925/70 Headings C3C C3G and C3P A foamed or unfoamed mouldable composition which can be used as a wood substitute comprises (A), 5-60 wt. per cent of water insoluble polyvinyl alcohol fibres having an average cut length of 0À5 to 30 mm.; and (B) 40-95 wt. per cent of a thermoplastic homo- or copolymer of one or more of styrene, acrylonitrile and methylmethacrylate having a Q value (defined) of not less than 5, the formed composition being in the form of either an admixture of (A) and (B) on a graft polymer of the monomer or monomers of (B) upon the (A) fibres. The composition has a "wood-like nature", i.e. a flexural modulus of at least 26,000 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and an impact strength of at least 4 kg.-cm./cm.<SP>2</SP> The Q value is a measure of the fluidity of the thermoplastic resin. The PVA fibres may have been water insolubilized by acetalization, benzalization or heat treatment. Other additives may also be present in the composition. In the case of graft polymerization an initiator, and preferably a molecular weight modifier, is used. In the examples, PVA fibres are mixed with: (1)-(4), (7), (8), (10), (11) and (13)-(16), styrene acrylonitrile copolymers; (5) and (17), styrene/acrylonitrile/methyl methacrylate copolymers; (6), polymethylmethacrylate; (12), polystyrene; (19), styrene/methylmethacrylate copolymer; (9) and (16), styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers, and foamed with azodicarbonamide; (18), styrene/acrylonitrile/methylmethacrylate copolymer and foamed as above; and (20), styrene/methyl methacrylate copolymer and foamed as above. In Examples (21)-(26) the following monomers are grafted on to PVA fibres: (21), (23) and (24), styrene and acrylonitrile; (22) styrene and methyl methacrylate; (25) methylmethacrylate and (26) styrene. The graft composition of Example (23) is foamed as above.
