1330982 Moulding iron-powder-filled plastics KHARKOVSKY ELEKTROMEKHANICHESKY ZAVOD IMENI 50-LETIA VELIKOI OKTYABRSKOI SOTSIALISTICHESKOI REVOLJUTSII 11 Sept 1971 42461/71 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] Electrical components, e.g. slot wedges or inserts for machines, rotor or stator cores, magnetic shunts or contactor cores, having mag. netic properties, are made by moulding by a process comprising mixing iron powder with a thermosetting resin containing a curing agent; subjecting the mixture to vacuum to remove included air or other gases or volatile reaction products; batching the composition and rolling into sheets having a thickness greater than that of the desired finished articles; shaping the sheets to form compacted blanks, allowing curing to take place for a period under ambient conditions and then completing the curing by applying heat in a controlled manner. Shaping may be performed by pressing between dies (Fig. 1 and 2, not showu) which may also cut the compacted blanks and combine them with glass fibre reinforcement. Alternatively the rolled sheets may be shaped into slot inserts by profiled rollers (Figs. 3-5, not shown) and subsequently severed, the production of slot wedges (Fig. 4, not shown) for various sizes of electrical machines being described. The preferred resin is a blend of 40-45% furfural resin with 60-55% of an epoxide mixed at 100‹ C. in the presence of maleic anhydride. Either hexamethylenediamine or polyethylenepolyamines may be used as curing agents and dibutyl phthalate plasticizer may be added. Typical proportions for the moulding composition (by weight) are 100 parts of resin, 300 to 400 of iron powder (grain size up to 50 microns), 15 of curing agent and 2 of plasticizer. The compacted blanks may be cold cured for 12-15 hours then heated in an air-drying cabinet from 180‹ to 200‹ C., kept at this temperature for 2 to 2¢ hours and then allowed to cool.
