Abstract
1330766 Laser glasses OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 9 June 1971 19612/71 Heading C1M [Also in Divisions C4 and H1] A neodymium-doped laser glass based on the lithiasilicate system with ranges in mole per cent of SiO 2 45-75 and Li 2 O 18-35 includes 0À5 to 10 mole per cent of alkali metal oxide selected from the group Na 2 O, K 2 O, Rb 2 O and Cs 2 O. The glass may also include up to 10 mole per cent of Al 2 O 3 and/or between 0À5 and 30 mole per cent of alkaline earth metal oxide selected from the group BeO, MgO, SrO and CaO. The neodymium oxide laserable component is present in an amount of between 0À1 to 2À0 mole per cent. Between 0À1 and 0À5 or more mole per cent of the solarizing inhibiting oxide CeO 2 may be included in the composition, and optionally up to 2 mole per cent of ZnO, CdO, TbO or La 2 O 3 may be used. The glass is prepared into rod or tube form from a melt of temperature in the range of 2500‹ F. and is annealed at a representative temperature of 950‹ F. for 3 hours. Specific examples of mole per cent compositions are given as follows:
