Abstract
1330765 Sealed lamp unit THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 June 1972 [2 June 1971] 18676/71 Heading F4R [Also in Division H1] A hermetically sealed lamp unit comprises a pair of members either containing or themselves consisting of a reflector and a lens respectively, each member having a rim which abuts the rim of the other and a layer of bonding material between the rims to secure and seal the two members together and a base member carrying a light source and being bonded to the reflector, the base member and reflector having interfitting mating portions. The bonding material is preferably an epoxy resin but may be a glass or glass/ceramic frit. In an embodiment, a vehicle headlamp including a twin filament tungsten halogen bulb 11 and a mask 15 therefor, has a soda glass or plastics front cover 12 a metal, glass or plastics reflector 13 and metal, glass or plastics base 14 secured to one another by adhesive. The respective rims of the cover, reflector and base may have a corresponding tongue and groove or rebates for the adhesive (Figs. 2b, 3b, 7 and 8, not shown) and are so made that a gap is left for the adhesive. To ensure correct location of the cover and reflector detents and correponding projections are formed in the rims (Figs. 2a and 3a, not shown). When a metal reflector is used the rim of the reflector 13 is bent up and over the rim of the cover 12. Metal clips or plastic moulding 69 may be put around the rims while the adhesive is setting. The moulding may be left in place to protect the rim. Slotted or apertured lugs may be provided integral with or bonded to the reflector for mounting the headlamp. A tubulation may be provided on the base for evacuating the air from the lamp or replacing it by an inert atmosphere, for use with an exposed tungsten filament. A high pressure gas or metal vapour lamp may be used in place of the tungsten filament lamp together with an inert gas filling. The headlamp may be used as a spot-lamp by incorporating an apertured screen or a plurality of vehicle lamps may be incorporated in one structure by joining together appropriate reflectors and front covers. A lamp suitable for use as an indoor or outdoor spot-light may also be made.
