Abstract
1330028 Electron beam irradiation apparatus MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 4 June 1971 [8 June 1970 (2)] 19025/71 Heading H1D An electron beam irradiation apparatus comprises an elongate cathode 23, Fig. 4, and a control electrode 24 which are surrounded by a plurality of cylindrical electrodes 25 at increasing potentials, these electrodes having elongate apertures aligned with the cathode and with an electron transmissive window 27 provided in the final electrode 26. At each end the electrodes are hermetically sealed together by annular insulators 28, and the ends are surrounded by vessels 34 filled with insulating gas or oil; one of the vessels contains voltage divider resistances 32 connecting the electrodes, and is provided with an insulating bushing 35 through which the power supply leads extend. The acceleration chamber is evacuated through a conduit in the earthed outer electrode, and the pumping speed may be increased two or three times by using apertured or mesh electrodes (Fig. 6, not shown) instead of the solid electrodes shown in Fig. 4. In one example the apparatus is 1400 mm. long and 200 mm. in diameter and accelerates a 30 mA beam to a potential of 250 KeV.
