Abstract

1329987 Olefin oxides UNION CARBIDE CORP 14 Dec 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 59292/70 Heading C2C Olefin oxides are prepared by a liquid phase co-oxidation process comprising admixing, in an organic liquid medium comprising mono- or dinitriles selected from saturated or aliphatic nitriles having up to 10 carbon atoms in the non-nitrilic moiety and saturated cyclo-aliphatic nitriles having up to 15 carbon atoms in the non-nitrilic moiety and up to 6 carbon atoms in each ring, or mixtures thereof, an epoxidizable olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon compound having from 3 to 22 carbon atoms; an aldehyde selected from unsubstituted straight-chain or branched-chain aldehydes having 2 to 7 carbon atoms or benzaldehyde; and an oxygen containing gas wherein the molar ratio of olefin to aldehyde is no greater than 15 to 1. Acetic and butyric, acids are obtained as byproducts in the above process.
