Abstract

1328813 Intrauterine devices M H KNOCH 13 Oct 1970 [14 Odt 1969] 48692/70 Heading ASR An intrauterine contraceptive device, Fig. 1, is of planar form and comprises a ring 1 of elastic material joined to the centre of an elastic member 3, by gold thread 2, and a generally V-shaped elastic member 10 joined by gold threads 11 and 12 to ring 1, the members 3 and 10 defining a generally triangular outer configuration of the device. Ends of the legs 8, 9 of member 10 are formed as loops 15, 16 bound by gold threads 17, 18 and lying under looped ends 4, 5 of member 3, loops 4, 5 being bound by gold threads 6, 7. Members 1, 3 and 10 may each be formed of two or more threads of silkworm or of synthetic material or of metal. The device is introduced by a probe, Fig. 6, comprising an outer tubular member 50 provided with a depth scale and a handle 51 and slideable over a rod 41 conneotable to the device and having a handle 40 so that the device may be folded in its plane and enclosed in member 50. The rod 41 has a slot (42), Fig. 4 (not shown) engageable with the member 10 and releasably lockable thereon by means of a slide (43) moved by a knob (44). A probe, Fig. 3 (not shown), for determining the distance C, Fig. 1, from the ostium uteri externum 27 to the plane where the uterus has a given width D comprises two rods (30), (31) each having a depth scale and fixed alongside each other for relative rotation about their longitudinal axes. One end of each rod has a part (34), (35) inclined to the respective rod axis, the rods being rotatable so that parts (34), (35) lie together when the probe is inserted, whereafter they are moved so that they diverge from each other with their free ends separated by distance D. After measuring distance C and also the distance A from the ostium uteri externum to the fundus uteri and the distance B from the ostium uteri externum to a tubar corner, a device is manufactured, or selected from a range of sizes, according to the measured dimensions A, B, C so that in use the device lies free from the uterus walls along the top of two sides of the uterus with an average clearance of about 1-2 mm. between said walls and the device.
