Abstract

1328745 Segregation of ores NILUX HOLDING S A 26 Nov 1971 [26 Nov 1970] 55025/71 Heading C7D A segregation process for the treatment of ores, in which the ore is preferably preheated and then mixed with a halide salt and a reductant or elevated temperature, eg 750-800‹ C is improved by adding steam to the atmosphere in the segregation zone. The steam increases the partial pressure of hydrogen halide formed in the zone and results in an improved rate of metal segregation and may also help to suppress competing reactions. In an example a copper ore is mixed with 0À5% sodium chloride and 3 to 5% coke and treated with an inert gas stream containing 15 to 25% steam at 750-800‹ C. The process is equally applicable to nickel ores. The apparatus preferably includes a fluidized bed in which the ore is heated, and a segregation chamber into which the ore overflows from the bed and to which the other reagents are fed, the steam being fed into the chamber below the average level of the ore such that the atmosphere in the chamber contains 15 to 30% by weight of steam.
