Abstract
1327586 Preparation of films SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 9 July 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 38990/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Films are made by electrostatically depositing particles of thermoplastic macromolecular material on to an earthed endless moving surface, heating the particles until they fuse together and then removing the layer before or after cooling it. The particles may be solid or liquid and may be applied from a spray-gun or, if solid, from a fluidized bed. Preferably the particles are charged. The surface is made of an electrically conducting material and is either a belt or a drum; it has a melting point higher than that of the thermoplastic material. Additives such as quartz, talc, clay &c. or pigments may be incorporated into the particles or they may be on the surface before deposition occurs. Fibres having a melting point above that of the thermoplastic material can also be incorporated into the film, preferably by depositing first a layer of particles, then a layer of fibres and another layer of fibres and fusing them and passing through one or more sets of pressure rollers. Examples illustrate the production of films of polyethylene, polypropylene and polyvinylchloride alone and mixed and with or without additives such as china clay, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate and quartz. Whilst the film is still fused, a layer such as a knitted cotton fabric may be pressed on to it to give a laminate.
