Abstract

1327374 Fibre-matrix composites NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 5 Aug 1970 [5 Aug 1969] 39186/69 Heading D1R [Also in Division Cl] A rigid rod for reinforcement uses in composite materials comprises a bundle of fibres and/or filaments each parallel to the axis and embedded in a matrix of carbon or silicon carbide. The fibres may be carbon, boron alumina or silicon carbide whiskers. The rod cross section may be triangular rectangular hexagonal or circular. In one embodiment a continuous tow of 7 micron diameter carbon fibres was passed over a set of rollers immersed in an alcohol solution of phenolic resin then drawn through a circular cross-section die to shape the tow and remove excess resin. The tow was passed through a temperature gradient of up to 200‹C to cure the resin then through a gradient of up to 1000‹C in an inert atmosphere to pyrolyse the resin. The resulting carbon rod was heated to 1200‹C by passing electric current, in an atmosphere of hydrogen and methyldichlorosilane, which decomposed to coat the rod with silicon carbide. The rods may reinforce a phenolic, or aluminium matrix. Alternative protective coatings are carbides of boron, or the metals of groups IVA, VA or VIB, borides, nitrides or oxides, or metals.
