Abstract

1327268 Chlorinated hydrocarbons IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Oct 1971 [16 Oct 1970] 49283/70 Heading C2C Highly chlorinated paraffin hydrocarbons are manufactured by contacting under anhydrous conditions and in the presence of a solvent and a free radical initiator, a chlorinated paraffin hydrocarbon containing at least 25% by weight of chlorine, with a countercurrent flow of chlorine or a chlorine-containing gas at 65- 105‹ C. at a pressure which precludes boiling of the solvent. The term "free radical initiator" includes the action of UV-rays, X-rays or γ- rays, or a free-radical forming catalyst such as a peroxide or an azo compound. Solvents exemplified include chloro and chlorofluoro hydrocarbons, e.g. CCl 4 . In the examples, chlorinated paraffin products containing 68-70 weight per cent chlorine were produced from a C 20-30 chlorinated paraffin mixture containing 41-43 weight per cent chlorine, by chlorination in COl 4 at 70‹ C. using an azo initiator.
