Abstract

1326413 Ignition systems MALLORY ELECTRIC CORP 6 Nov 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 52906/70 Heading FIB A breakerless ignition system for an internalcombustion engine comprises a multi-stage transistor amplifier circuit, the collector-emitter circuits of the transistors being in parallel across a D.C. power source 10. Means inter-connects the base of each transistor after the first stage transistor, to the collector emitter circuit of the preceding stage transistor whereby conduction of a transistor at one stage will place the base of the succeeding stage transistor at substantially earth potential to prevent conduction thereof. The number of stages is even whereby the final stage transistor 30 and the first stage transistor 24 conduct alternately. The system further comprises a step up transformer 98 having a primary winding 96 and a secondary winding 100, the primary winding being in the collector emitter circuit of the final stage transistor, a voltage dividing network connected to the power source and the base of the first transistor stage, the voltage available to the base via the network being insufficient to bias the first stage transistor to conduct, a photo-cell 48 between the voltage dividing network and the base of the first transistor, a light source 20, and means (not shown) to repetitively impinge light from the light source on to the photo-cell in timed relation to engine operation to energize the photocell whereby the photo-cell will develop a voltage which is added to the voltage of the voltage dividing network to bias the first stage transistor to conduct. Conduction of the first stage transistor 24 results in cut off of the final stage transistor 30 and collapse of the magnetic field in the primary winding 96 to induce a voltage in the secondary winding 100 sufficient to fire a spark plug 102 of an internal combustion engine. Components of the circuit illustrated in Fig.2 are mounted within the housing of the distributor 106. A centrifugal advance mechanism is provided and this is also included together with a cup-shaped shutter wheel in the distributor housing.
