Abstract

1326197 Treating polymers P J FYDELOR and K V LOVELL 26 Nov 1970 [26 Nov 1969] 57945/69 Heading C3P The solvent resistance of polymers is increased by exposure to the active species formed by an electrically sustained discharge in a gaseous mixture at a pressure not less than 100 mm. of mercury and comprising a major proportion by volume of an inert gas with a minor proportion of a gas which increases the temperature of the discharge plasma. Foils may be placed or drawn between the electrodes or exposed to the gas downstream from the electrodes. The polymer may also be treated in emulsion form as a fine spray. Examples refer to vinyl chloride polymers or copolymers with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride and to atactic polypropylene. The P.V.C. may be plasticized and stabilized and may contain an organo-tin salt as sensitizer. The gas may be argon/oxygen or argon/air. One example refers to the treatment of a paper coated with P.V.C.
