1326004 Photographic type composing INTERNATIONAL PHOTON CORP 14 Sept 1970 [15 Aug 1969] 40888/69 Heading B6W A photographic type-composing machine has a character carrier, e.g. a drum 4 or endless belt, having an array of characters in columns and rows thereon and movable so that each column passes successively and repetitively through a projection zone 88, 89, 91, 90 associated with said carrier, control means being provided to vary the time at which an illuminating means, which may be a flash lamp, cathode-ray tube or laser source, e.g. 14-2, is energized so that a character in a given column may be illuminated at any one of a plurality of locations within the zone as said column passes therethrough, whereby a latent image of the character sweeps across a portion 94, of an image receiving surface, e.g. a film 36, so that character images forming lines of composition are spaced in accordance with their widths. A character occupying a portion 92 of the projection zone may have its own illuminating means 14-1 to 14-4 and image rotating deflector, e.g. dove prisms 30-1 to 30-5, so that timed illumination of selected characters in a column comprising like characters with their base lines perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the drum will reproduce those characters correctly spaced along a line. The film may be moved to effect line spacing. Alternatively a lens (100), Fig. 5 (not shown) may replace the prisms, illumination of a column resulting in reproduction of a vertical column of characters on a film.
