Density separators; bearings.-Apparatus for separating suspended matter, such as tar from gas by centrifugal action, comprises a double fan mounted on a disk e<2> within a conical casing a, the outer edge of the fan being formed with a channel h so that the tar &c. is collected and delivered by centrifugal force into a passage j from which it is discharged by the opening k. The channels may be formed either by bending over the ends of the vanes or by means of angle-irons riveted to them. in place of separate channels for each blade, the blades may be attached to the inside of a sheet metal cone. Steam or water may be supplied to the apparatus by the pipe n. The shaft b carrying the fan may run in ball bearings l external to the casing and provided with a stufting-box m, the bearing being so mounted that it is removable bodily along the shaft to give access to the stuffing-box. Steam or water may be supplied through the orifice o to wash out the gutter j. Two or more such apparatus may be used in series.
