Abstract

1325864 Sampling particulate material FISONS Ltd 6 Nov 1970 [26 Nov 1969] 57801/69 Heading B8N A method of removing a sample from a stream of particles, e.g. a falling stream, comprises positioning a hollow sampling member to one side of the stream, the member having an aperture with a generally rectangular elevation when viewed through the stream, the aperture also having substantially zero projected area along the line of flow of the stream; moving the member along a substantially straight line through the stream with the aperture foremost so that particles are culled from the stream; and recovering the culled particles. Apparatus for use in carrying out the above method comprises a hollow sampling member 1 having a rectangular aperture 2; means 6 for moving the member with its aperture foremost through a stream 23 of particles; and means for mounting the apparatus on a duct 13 through which the stream flows. The moving means 6 is a double acting pneumatic ram although an hydraulic ram, an electrically operated rack and pinion mechanism, or a crank lever mechanism may be used. The mounting means comprises a delivery shoot 19, e.g. of stainless -steel coated on its inner surface with P.T.F.E., having a flange 11 bolted to the duct at the location of aperture 12. Guide rods 7, 8 attached to the member 1 are slidably mounted in guide tubes 9, 10 respectively. Oil-containing air exhausted from the ram 6 may pass through the guide tubes to facilitate lubrication. In use, the member is moved from the illustrated position and through the stream. Halting the member adjacent the aperture 12 will cause the sample by its inertia to pass from the member and via the shoot 19 into a bag or a device for classifying the particles according to size. In an alternative embodiment the member is positioned on rod 5 such that sampling occurs when the ram 6 is extended. The sample in this case will be delivered into a shoot positioned on the duct opposite the ram. The aperture may be curved.
