Abstract

1324922 Radiation absorption bone measurement NORLAND CORP 26 Oct 1971 [26 Oct 1970] 49739/71 Heading G1A In an apparatus for the determination of the mineral content of bone and associated tissue by the absorption of Y rays in which the part to be measured is enclosed in fluid having the same absorption as the tissue and the measurement is obtained by a comparison of a reading known to be obtained solely from tissue and fluid with one from bone, tissue, and fluid. The enclosure is scanned by a collimated beam from a radio active source in a programmed manner whereby in response to the actuation of start button 42, Fig. 1, motor 14 causes the arm 13 carrying source 19 and sensor 21, 22 to move in its scan at a fast speed until the detector signal level indicates that the beam has encountered bone 17, 18; the motor reverses and backs off the beam a predetermined distance from the bone, and a referencing or zeroing reading is taken and stored in a capacitor; the forward scan is recommenced at a slower rate and a logarithm signal using the stored tissue-liquid measurement as a reference is derived from a comparator and log converter and integrated to indicate on a digital meter the mineral content. A number of scans may be averaged and a separate beam may be used for locating the edge of the bone. In the case where the beam may be called upon to scan two laterally spaced bones means may be provided whereby a desired one is measured. The scanning is terminated by the departure of the beam from the trailing edge of the bone and two pulses resulting from the leading and trailing edge may be used to measure the distance across the bone. The drive includes reversible clutch mechanism and interlock protection against false movement. The integrating capacitor is precharged to approximately the reference value during the forward bone search. Alternatively the steps may be controlled individually by push buttons, and/or the measure and reference signals may be separately integrated and subtracted. The time constant of the capacitor may be made to differ during approach and measuring.
