Abstract

1324460 Forming zinc phosphate coatings on metal surfaces AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc 8 Nov 1971 51855/71 Heading C7U Surfaces of Al, Fe or Zn are contacted with a solution containing ions of zinc phosphate nitrite, nitrate, sodium, potassium, and fluoride, the solution having a free acidity of from 0À2 to 5 points and a total acidity of at least 4 points. The Zn to phosphate ratio is at least 0À6:1, nitrate to phosphate at least 1:1, and there is at least 0À7 g/l Zn, which may be the oxide or carbonate. The nitrate concentration is preferably 1À5 to 10 g/l, the nitrite 0À006 to 1g/l, and the fluoride 0À025 to 2À5 g/l. The solution may also contain Ni ions. The temperature may be 45 to 60‹C. the time of contact 15 seconds to 3 minutes, and the pH 3À0 to 3À4. The coating may be subsequently rinsed with a hexavalent chromium solution.
