Abstract

1324196 Building pneumatic tyres NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT SHINNOI PROMYSHLEN NOSTI 23 June 1971 29334/71 Heading B7C A mechanism for building in the beads of pneumatic tyre covers during tyre manufacture on a fixed shoulder drum comprises bead setting means 17, levers 6 for pressing the ends of tyre cord plies against the shoulder 8 of the drum, which levers are provided with means for moving them to engage with an annular coil spring 11, the spring 11 being mounted on levers 10 which can be moved to lift the spring 11, both the levers 6 and the levers 10 being pivotally mounted on a cylindrical carrier 3 axially movable with respect to the tyre building drum. The means for moving the levers 6 to engage with the annular coil spring 11 comprises an air cylinder 13 having a piston which moves a cam member or template 14 engaging one end of each of the levers 6. The free ends of the levers 6 are interconnected by a spring system 16 and further levers 12 are articulated to the levers 10, the levers 12 serving to fold the ends of the cord plies when the cords are pressed against the drum shoulder. Further piston and cylinder devices 1 and 4 are provided to move respectively the levers 10 and the cylindrical carrier 3. In use of the mechanism, the tyre cord plies 7 hanging over the shoulder 8 of the drum are initially clamped between the annular spring 11 on the levers 10 and the spring system 16 on the levers 6, the levers 6 and 10 are then lowered and the carrier 3 is moved so that the levers 6 press the cord plies against the drum shoulder 8, the bead setting means 17 is then moved in to set the bead 19, Fig. 4, and finally the levers 6 are moved away from the levers 10 and the levers 10 are themselves raised to hold the tyre cord plies 7 around the bead 19.
