Abstract

1324006 Coating LENNIG CHEMICALS Ltd 7 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969] 45937/69 Heading B2E Substrates such as treated paper, pelts, leather or leather substitutes are given a decorative finish by applying to the surface (a) a resin/ pigment liquid mix and (b) a liquid which under the conditions of application does not form a uniform mixture with (a) and then drying the thus coated substrate. The liquids may be applied to the substrate in any order, the second being applied before the first has dried, by dipping, padding, spraying or curtain coating. Alternatively the liquids may be applied simultaneously. Preferably one of the liquids is applied in a random fashion, e.g. as spots. The weight ratio of liquid (b) to liquid (a) may vary between 2 to 1 and 1 to 100. The resin may be a polymer or copolymer of acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acids and the esters and amides thereof and Examples of these are given. Specified pigments are white lead, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, lithopone, zinc sulphide; barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, silica, talc, mica, clays, iron oxide, carbon black, cadmium sulphide, toluidene red, lithol toners, chrome orange, chrome yellow, hansa yellow, chrome green, phthalocyanine green or blue. The liquid (b) may be an organic solvent, water, water mixed with surfactants or liquid surfactants and Examples are specified. The substrate may be finished by plating and the application of lacquer coats.
