Abstract
1323675 Hollow probes; endoscopes; blood sampling NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 2 July 1970 [9 July 1969] 34589/69 Heading A5R A hollow probe assembly adapted for use with a vacuum producing apparatus comprises two tubes defining an annular space between them, said space being open at one end and adapted at the other for application of suction. Apparatus for taking foetal blood samples comprises a first tube 1 having a shorter second tube 2 spaced around the distal end portion of the tube 1 defining an annular space 3 closed at one end by a wall 4. A tube 6 communicates with the space 3 and is adapted at 7 for attachment to a flexible vacuum pump line, not shown, and a capillary tube 10 communicates with the interior of the tube 1 at its distal end via engagement in apertures 8, 9. In use, the distal end of the tubes 1 and 2 is placed against the presenting part of the foetus, reduced pressure being brought about in the space 3 and a lance 13, 14, removably slidably mounted in a slot 12 of the tube 1, advanced to make an incision, a droplet of blood being retained in the tube 10 which is preferably heparinised. Suitable illuminating and distant viewing apparatus 15 may be employed. The apparatus may be used with different, removable items placed in the interior of the tube 1 thereby being adapted, e.g. as an endoscope, amnioscope, or for use with electrodes. The annular construction may be placed around or inside the distal end of other conventional apparatus to facilitate use. (For Figure see next page)
