The mouthpiece 10 is of two parts 11 and 12, which are telescopically connected to the sounding tube 13 by means of part annular tenon, 32. The mouthpiece 10 is made of a plastics material, and the sounding tube 13 of wood. Mouthpiece shell 11 is substantially hollow to accommodate insert 12, and internally formed to constitute the upper and side walls of the windway 15 and 18 respectively. Segmental insert 12, which may be removably or permanently inserted within shell 11, comprises the floor 23 of the windway and the leading edge of the knife edge 27. Floor 23 co-operates with the side walls 18 of the windway at a predetermined position to define, the shape of the windway, with the knife-edge 27 at a pre-determined position with respect to the end of the windway. The wooden sounding tube is formed with stub knife edge 31, and tenon 32 is pushed into slot 20, so that leading knife-edge 27 abuts fully on to stub 30, to form flush surfaces internally and externally.
