Abstract

1322442 Rotary dryers WYSSMONT CO Inc 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 21224/71 Heading F4G Finely divided or fragile material is fed through an inlet 54 into the uppermost tray 56a of a series of annular trays 56 rotated within a heated and ventilated housing 20, and is caused to move downwards from tray to tray by fixed wiper arms 116 and 118 which divert the material over the outer edge of each tray into a shoot 88 having an inclined portion 102, means 100, 104, 130 being provided to prevent spilling of the material over the edges of the tray, and means for spreading the material evenly over the trays. The trays 56 comprise truncated segments 234 supported on rings 236 and 238 loosely clamped to radial arms 240 which are secured to vertical bars 60 secured to frames 62 and 64 supported on a rotated shaft 66. The wiper arms 116 and 118 co-operate with a divider 122 so that the inner portion of ma terial on one tray becomes the outer portion on the next tray. The shoots 88 are staggered around the trays so that the material remains on each tray for nearly one revolution. The insulated housing 20 is heated to 1100‹F. by U-shaped heaters in which gas and air are burned and exhausted at 48, 44. The heaters may employ a heat-transfer liquid, steam, oil or electricity. Air (or steam or inert gas) is circulated horizontally by turbofans 50 rotated by shaft 67 concentric with the shaft 66 and a bearing 65. The air may be recirculated or exhausted from the dryer or preheated, and the housing is kept at a slight negative pressure. The material is spread evenly over the tray by an adjustable leveller arm 138. The material falls from the lowermost tray 56h on to the bottom wall of the housing 20 whence it is pushed by blades 144 to an outlet 86, which may be connected via a vapour lock to a conveyer (not shown). The housing is thermally insulated with asbestos board and wire mesh fibreglass. Expansion joints 216 are provided.
