Abstract
1322152 Electro-deposition of chromium M L ALKAN Ltd 13 Dec 1971 [27 Jan 1971] 3326/71 Headings C7B and C7C An aqueous chromium plating bath comprises chromic acid, strontium sulphate in excess of its solubility in the bath and ammonium silicoflouride to provide SO4 and SiF 6 catalytic ions, at least one non-catalytic strontium compound, e.g. strontium chromate, which will produce regulation of the sulphate content of the bath; and may also contain a non-catalytic ammonium salt, e.g. ammonium dichromate. The bath may be produced from a dry composition of the above substances, including 80-90 wt. per cent chromic acid. As fume suppressant an ammonium salt of a fluorinated carboxylic or sulphonic acid may be used; and may be added to the bath as a solution, or as a tablet containing a suitable ammonium salt as a binder. Selection of bath temperature will produce hard or mirror bright coatings, e.g. using tin/lead alloy or antimonial/lead alloy as counter-electrode. Articles to be plated may be nickel coated.
